The presentation will deal with the relationship between competing narratives about the Second World War in the historiographies of former Yugoslavia since the late 1980s. Particular attention will be paid to the way in which periods of radical political change have affected social memory and controversies between as well as within states.

Commemoration of the events of World War II loom large in multi-ethnic, post-Soviet Latvia. Different communities have often developed different narratives and separate modes of commemoration. These rituals became codified in a set of commemorations that were either ignored by the other communities, or used as an opportunity to protest the other group’s narrative.
