This project (financed by Vetenskapsrådet) focuses on a U.S. Cavalry officer, Hugh Lenox Scott (1853–1934), a soldier-diplomat who served on the American Plains, in Cuba, the Philippines and on the Mexican border in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Based on his ability to establish trust and to forge close ties to the people and nations that he encountered, Scott’s personal archive gives unique insights into the contacts, relations and perspectives of non-American actors in the frontier zones during the most intense phase of the American imperial expansion.
